Acne Rosacea – What It is, The Symptoms And How To Prevent It

Everyone knows what acne is, but what about Acne Rosacea? It is a condition that affects many people worldwide, including current world leaders like former president Bill Clinton and Russian Prime Minister Boris Yeltsin. Acne Rosacea is a chronic inflammation of the blood vessels in the skin and especially facial area. It produces a rough complexion on the face with several small acne patches on the forehead, nose and cheeks.   It is more frequently found in men where it causes the skin on the nose to swell and thicken. If left untreated, this swelling of the nose can eventually lead to a condition called Rhinophyma. There are several factors that can contribute to rosacea outbreaks. Two of the most common causes are the consumption of alcoholic beverages and consuming rich, spicy foods. If you think you may be suffering from acne rosacea, it is better if you consult a doctor, since acne rosacea symptoms are very similar to a more serious condition known as Lupus.

Acne rosacea will make the face and skin more sensitive than healthy, non damaged skin.  It will attack the skin through the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of the skin.  It is formed by dead skin cells that are held in place by keratin, a protein located in the body.  The stratum corneum keeps molecules from passing in and out of the outer-most layer and protects the under layers of the skin, making them more vulnerable to skin sensitivity.  Healthy, unaffected skin is less likely to be irritated by skin care products.  With acne rosacea, the skin tissue becomes more susceptible to irritations from injured nerve endings or an excess of neurotransmitters. As the condition gets worse, the skin will not be able to protect the nerve endings satisfactorily.  Although a healthy immune system and repeated moisturizing could help reduce these effects, some extra steps might still need to be taken.

People who suffer from acne rosacea should stay away from products that will dry out the skin, like alcohol.  As a substitute they should use a product such as Proactive Solution or other comparable alcohol free cleansers.  Other solutions like Clearasil or Oxy-5 contain the ingredients benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid, which are known to be agents that can help to clear acne.  If combining with additional products, like retinoid, users should stop using the acne topical treatment products, as it could further dry out and irritate the skin.

You should also keep in mind that it is essential to be gentle when washing your face.  Acne resacea patients should use gentle cleansing products and also protect their skin with a dye-free moisturizer that has petrolatum, glycerin, or aloe vera.  Each one of these ingredients has anti inflammatory properties that will help keep the skin moisturized and protected.  If you apply a light coat of this to the affected area before going outdoors, especially in the sun, it will help minimize acne outbreaks.

Acne rosacea could stay with a person, particularly men, for their whole lives. But it doesn’t really have to. In most cases it goes away on its own, so in the meantime; take some care to keep it at a minimum.
