Prescription Acne Skin Care
Treatments
Most people who suffer from acne somehow don’t get the
professional advice of a qualified doctor to treat their acne.
However, it is highly advisable that you consult with a skin
specialist, or a dermatologist. A dermatologist can provide you
with very valuable information, advice and tips that you can
use to better the condition of your
acne.
If your acne is only moderate and not serious, then you may get
an over-the-counter medication. But if you have reached a
severe state, then you should arrange a dermatologist
consultation. Your dermatologist will review your acne
condition and prescribe the most adequate acne
prescription drugs for you. This is the recommended
approach to attack your acne because the prescription medicine
will have a much more effective method than the one an
over-the-counter can offer.
Prescription acne skin care treatments consist of two types.
These are the antibiotics and ointments. Antibiotics are
usually the most popular method used to fight acne, and they
can be used orally or as a form of lotion. Ointment
prescriptions contain ingredients like zinc or
retinoid.
Antibiotics
The most common antibiotic used to treat acne is tetracycline.
The tetracycline acts by killing the bacteria that causes the
acne and it also helps to decrease any inflammation resulting
from the acne. Something you should know about antibiotic
treatment is that it could take weeks or even months before you
start seeing the results. Also, you have to continue the
antibiotic treatment even after your acne has
subsided.
Like many other medications, the tetracycline antibiotics have
some side effects. It will make your skin more sensitive to sun
light, which could lead to severe sun burns if you stay under
the sun for a long period of time. Other side effects may
include dizziness and stomach upset.
Ointments
Antibiotic ointments typically have less complication in
comparison to oral antibiotics. They are very useful when it
comes to killing the bacteria that causes acne. The interesting
thing about ointments is that when they are used in conjunction
with other treatments like benzoyl peroxide, the bacteria may
not develop resistance to the antibiotics.
Retinoid
Derived from vitamin A, retinoid can be applied directly onto
the skin by way of creams or lotions. Retinoid medications are
very helpful for treating blackheads and whiteheads by opening
up clogged pores. As with many other acne ingredients, retinoid
can make your skin dry.
If your acne is so severe that it doesn’t respond to either
antibiotics or ointments, then oral retinoid can be used
instead. What an oral retinoid will do is to cause the top
layer of your skin to peel off, which will then open up more
pores. Another advantage about oral retinoid is that it will
prevent the body from producing excess sebum, which is the oily
substance that produces your oily skin.
Oral retinoid could be very effective in getting rid of acne
quickly. However, they must be used with caution because the
side effects of this ingredient could be very serious. Oral
retinoids should be avoided when a woman is pregnant, as it
could lead to birth defects. Other complications may include
liver damage and depression. In some very rare occasions, the
depression could even lead to suicidal thoughts. This is why it
is crucial that patients on oral retinoid treatment should get
regular medical attention and follow-up to make sure that the
side effects and complications are reduced to the minimum
amounts possible.
If you are unsure about how reliable over the counter acne
medications are, then always ask your dermatologist who can
provide you with reliable prescription acne treatment, and any
other advice so that you can get the most
effective prescription acne medication available
based on your particular condition.
